A person who is involved in formal learning in a school is called a student. The word has Latin origin meaning zeal, study. Disciple, pupil or ward are words analogous to student though are used in different context. A student involved in religious studies is usually referred to as a disciple while a pupil or ward is usually involved in the formative years of study like elementary or primary education. A freshman or fresher is a student who is in the first year in a University while a sophomore is a second year student, the term being more common in U.S. A junior is a student in the penultimate year of a college while a senior is a final year student. The terminology varies with geography.
Students in many countries up to a certain age have to go through compulsory education, the age limit varying from country to country. They have enacted laws to provide compulsory universal free elementary education to their young citizens. In some countries, students have formed student bodies in the form of associations or unions, sometimes with political affiliation. The students managing these bodies later on join mainstream politics.
Students have been involved in student movement in all over the world for various causes that has resulted in change of oppressive governments and democratization in some cases, the most recent one being in Nepal where the monarchy was overthrown. November 17 th is celebrated as International Students Day in memory of the students killed calling for peace before WW II.
