With rising cost of material, providing free education alone is not enough to lure students from poor families to schools as many of them can not afford to buy the necessary school supplies. Hence many governments and NGOs have put forth schemes for providing free school supplies to poor and needy students. One way of lowering the cost is to recycle old and sparingly used school materials. The school supplies can be anything like back packs, pencils, books, loose leaf paper, pens, printer paper etc.
Many NGOs collect donations from various quarters like teachers, corporate houses and the general public for buying school supplies and distribute them to needy students. They have created websites that provide details like list of schools they have adopted, details of the donors and fund raising campaigns they propose to conduct etc. Some organizations arrange campaigns for collecting unused or sparingly used, excess stock of school supplies and deliver them to needy students.
Many communities have taken up distributing free school supplies to the schools in their neighborhood as a social responsibility and are actively involved in it. Some corporate houses also contribute their mite in this direction as part of ‘Corporate Social Responsibility' (CSR) initiative. These initiatives can really make a difference in imparting education to a wider section of the population.
n the whole providing free school supplies not only helps needy students, but is also an environmentally friendly act due to recycling of materials that results in conservation of nature.
