A school is a place for learning or acquire knowledge from persons who impart the knowledge called teachers to persons who acquire it viz. pupils or students. The concept of school is as old as human civilization itself. There are references in ancient Indian texts of schools called Gurukul where the teachers were called Guru and students, Shishya and the tradition of teaching was called Guru-Shishya parampara. The schools during Roman civilization were called Roman schools while in Islamic countries schools were imparting primarily religious knowledge and were called Madrassas.
In modern times, most countries have a formal education system consisting of various stages like primary school, secondary school, middle school, senior secondary school etc. with the state usually taking care of monitoring the running of the school, forming curriculum, conducting examination etc. and take policy decisions. Public schools or state schools are funded by the state while private schools are paid for by the parents of the students. The duration of primary education usually varies from 6 to 9 years while secondary education between 3 and 6 years. There is geographical variation in the terminology and the duration of each stage of schooling.
Modern schools are equipped with buildings for classrooms, library, canteen, gymnasium, laboratories, auditorium, play ground, etc. Other than imparting knowledge as per curriculum, they also provide for other skills like games, debate, theatre etc. aimed at developing a well rounded personality. Boarding schools are residential schools where the students live in the school campus itself.
