Online Education
Online education or e-learning is a popular means of acquiring educational qualifications in the comfort of one's home. It encompasses web based education though all computer based education like computer aided training etc. are not considered to be part of online education. There are many advantages to online education like convenience of pursuing it whenever one finds time, absence of commuting to attend classes in classrooms etc. It also provides a means to continue one's education if it has been discontinued for any reason.
The popularity of online education has created virtual universities that award academic degrees and some of them may require some interaction with the faculty at campuses for orientation or counseling. Other than academia, many companies are also offering online certification courses like Microsoft or Oracle certification programs that test the skills of students in their software packages.
The cost of online education can only decrease with increasing popularity of the courses as the high initial cost has to be recovered over a period of time. One of the reasons for the popularity of online education is the flexibility it offers to the students in terms of choice of courses, timing etc. Discussion forums and bulletin boards offer a facility for students to interact with each other online. They may also interact with the faculty through emails for counseling and clarifications. The absence of face to face interaction between the teachers and the taught is a drawback but that is a price one has to pay for a host of other benefits.
