The purpose of education is to disseminate knowledge, to provide training in order to enhance the skill level of an individual. It not only helps in creating an awareness of all the happenings around the individual but also increases the employability of the person by imparting specialized knowledge. The knowledge acquisition can take place through various means like reading books, listening to lectures, conducting experiments, making observations, computers etc. Making a person literate is one of the fundamental goals of providing education. The earliest form of education begins at home when the child starts to learn new things by listening and observing the surroundings. The word education has Latin roots meaning ‘to rear'.
There are various levels of education depending on the age of the individual like elementary, primary, tertiary, higher education etc. Places where the transfer of knowledge takes place between the teacher and the taught are called schools or colleges or universities, the terminology varying with the level of education. The persons attending a school are called students, pupils or disciples and those imparting knowledge are called teachers, lecturers, professors etc.
The students attending a school would require various materials like paper, pencil, pens, books etc. collectively called school supplies. The students after undergoing courses for certain duration are ‘tested' for their knowledge levels though examination. Those who have successfully passed the examination, viz. get the minimum marks, are awarded certificates or degrees or diplomas which depend on the level of education. Universities are places of higher learning and research leading to bachelor's or master's or doctorate degrees. The curriculum followed by the schools and universities are constantly updated to reflect the ever changing technology and our understanding of the life around us.
The word education has vast connotations, it can be acquisition of knowledge in the field of the arts, the sciences, humanities, engineering, medicine, etc. or it can also be in any of the vocational courses like carpentry, printing, metal working, tailoring etc. Nowadays education is targeted more and more at providing job oriented courses that increase the employability of a person. Educational psychology is that branch of psychology dealing with the way education is imparted and understood by the humans. Researchers are trying to understand how the brain functions vis-à-vis learning a new language, acquiring knowledge, its interpretation etc. It is the aim of such research to improve teaching skills and make it easier for students to learn.
With the advent of internet and the World Wide Web, online education provides an effective alternative to the traditional classroom based approach of imparting education. One can attend online courses at his/her convenience and the comfort of one's home. Various certificates, degrees or diplomas are awarded by virtual universities or even corporates to persons undergoing these online courses and tests. Computer based training tools (CBT) through multimedia also offer another convenient means of learning through computers. Often there is a mix of traditional classroom teaching along with these CBTs to make imparting education more fun and effective.
