A book is a collection of written material usually on paper bound together between covers. The base used for writing have varied through the ages from stone, tree bark, palm leaves, parchment and cloth to paper as we know today. Before the advent of printing press in the 15 th century, books were handwritten and various materials have been used for making the impression like wax tablets, ink made from gum and soot etc. It took enormous amount of effort to make copies of books in those days with many calligraphers involved in duplicating the written material.
In the initial days of printing, wooden blocks were carved to create an image of the matter to be reproduced and they were dipped in ink and impression created on paper or cloth. The word paper has its origin from the papyrus plant whose stem was used to create the base for writing. The earliest use of papyrus based writing date back to pre Christian era. The paper used to make books nowadays are alkaline in character which help in maintaining the quality for a long time. A library is a facility for keeping a large collection of books which the public can use for reference.
With the advent of digital era, e-books or electronic books are common wherein the subject material is stored electronically in CDs or magnetic tapes or disks. They can store enormous amount of written material in small volume and can be easily transmitted from one place to another electronically.
